Our inclusive and resilient education work gives every child the opportunity to learn literacy and numeracy at the right level.
Education is a fundamental human right for all. Inclusive education is at the core of our programming. By tackling the intersecting barriers to children accessing education, we can help children to realise their rights to quality education and achieve their full potential. Our projects focus on delivering girls’ education and early childhood care and education for the most marginalized children, especially those with disabilities, and those facing intersecting challenges such as poverty, climate change, political instability and child marriage.
We focus on early childhood education and basic literacy and numeracy skills, laying the foundations for children to have a brighter future. Access to inclusive and quality education for girls essential to promoting gender equality and empowerment. Education gives women and girls the opportunity to access social, economic and political opportunities. Early childhood care and education addresses the period from birth to 8 years old. It is a key stage for education intervention because it capitalises on a period of rich brain development for children who cannot read and understand a simple text will struggle to learn anything else in school. They are more likely to repeat a grade and more likely to drop out of school. They are less likely to benefit from further training and skills programs. At a national level, this will lead to worse health outcomes, greater youth unemployment and deeper levels of poverty. Every child deserves the dignity and opportunity that foundational learning brings. We need a global effort to tackle the learning crisis head on. Together, we can help every child gain basic reading and maths skills and unlock their potential.
A world with education for all we are making progress.
But there’s more to be done. All children have the right to a safe, inclusive and quality education. We want all children to be educated for life, in a safe and nurturing environment, in order to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Globally, 70% of children in low- and middle-income countries live in learning poverty, and even if they attend school, are not able to read and understand a simple text. Unlock Literacy is Plan Aid evidence-based approach to ensuring children, especially the most vulnerable, read with comprehension and develop a love of learning, working in partnership with children, their families, communities, teachers, schools, and education systems.
